Borrowed Words: a metáfora computacional do eu (C2)
The machine's most consequential invention was not speed but a metaphor. It borrowed our words — memory, language, reading, decision — and returned them altered, so that within two generations people had begun to describe themselves in the borrowed vocabulary and to find it apt. We now speak of processing an emotion, of bandwidth, of being unable to access a name, and we do so without the faintest sense of quotation. A metaphor that is noticed is an ornament; a metaphor that is not noticed is a belief. What makes the arrangement difficult to resist is that the machine performs, visibly and without complaint, operations we had always assumed required an interior. It sorts. It corrects. It anticipates the end of a sentence with a fluency that occasionally exceeds the writer's own, which is humiliating in a novel way, since the humiliation cannot be shared with the offender. And so the traffic runs both ways: we lent it our words, and it lends us, in return, an image of ourselves as devices with faults. The chief casualty is not intelligence, of which there is no shortage, but the older assumption that a mind is something one has rather than something one runs.

A sentença "A metaphor that is noticed is an ornament; a metaphor that is not noticed is a belief" organiza o ensaio porque
