Reached, Not Spoken To: disponibilidade contra presença (C2)
What the device abolished was not distance but waiting, and waiting, it turns out, had been doing a great deal of unacknowledged work. A letter took nine days, and in those days the absent person was obliged to be imagined; one composed them, revised them, was occasionally disappointed on their return by the inferior original. Correspondence was a genre. Now the other party is continuously available, and availability has quietly replaced presence, which is not the same thing and is worse at most of the tasks presence used to perform. Notice the vocabulary of the new arrangement. We do not say we spoke to someone; we say we reached them, as if human beings were now a kind of terrain across which one moves, or fails to. And notice what is punished. Silence, once the ordinary condition between two people separated by a county, has been reclassified as an event requiring explanation, so that a person who simply puts the thing down for an afternoon is understood to have made a statement. The pocket-sized rectangle did not, in the end, connect anyone to anyone. It removed the interval in which connection had been felt, and left us in permanent contact and permanent uncertainty as to whether we are in touch.
