The Bell and the Queue: o currículo que ninguém avalia (C2)
Ask any adult what they retained from eleven years of formal instruction and you will be told, after some embarrassment, almost nothing: a few dates, a theorem misremembered, a poem's first line. This is routinely reported as a failure of schools. It is nothing of the kind. It is evidence that the curriculum was never the syllabus. What the institution transmitted, with an efficiency no examination has ever measured, was a relation to time: that the day may be divided by a bell into portions one did not choose; that an interest may be terminated at its most absorbing moment; that one's presence is recorded, and that this record is somehow oneself. Add to this an education in hierarchy so complete that most of us can still, decades later, identify the exact tone in which a corridor instruction is issued. None of it appears in the prospectus, and none of it is forgotten. Those who campaign to reform education by adjusting the subjects taught are therefore addressing the least durable part of the enterprise. The building teaches. The timetable teaches. The queue teaches, and it teaches the same lesson to the child who excels and the child who fails, which is why the two remember it identically.

O editorial refuta a premissa segundo a qual
