The Over-Signified Fruit: o excesso de sentido e a perda do objeto (C2)

There is no fruit more exhausted by meaning than the apple. It has been made to stand for temptation, for knowledge, for gravity, for municipal branding, for the tidy sum of a teacher's gratitude; and it has borne each assignment with the same waxy indifference. Other fruits are permitted to be merely themselves — the plum has escaped allegory almost entirely — but the apple arrives at the table already annotated, a footnote in search of a text. What interests me is not the accumulation but the cost of it. Every meaning laid upon an object subtracts something from its capacity to be perceived. We no longer see the fruit; we recognise the emblem, which is a lazier operation and takes a fraction of the time. Hold one, though, and the case for the emblem weakens. The weight is wrong for a symbol: too dense, too particular, faintly cold, marked by a bruise no allegory required. The stem, that absurd woody afterthought, belongs to no tradition. It is at such moments that one suspects the fruit has been humouring us for centuries, submitting to interpretation as a large animal submits to a small child, and waiting, with the patience of the genuinely inert, for us to run out of ideas.

A ironia central do ensaio reside em

Resposta correta: B

O eixo do texto é a afirmação de que "Every meaning laid upon an object subtracts something from its capacity to be perceived", seguida da constatação de que "we recognise the emblem" em vez de ver a fruta. A ironia se completa quando o contato físico desmente o emblema: "The weight is wrong for a symbol: too dense, too particular, faintly cold".
