Water plants: inversão com were it not for (C2)

A pond is not a place; it is a slow argument about light. Everything in it is competing for the same few centimetres immediately beneath the surface, and the plants that win are the ones that stop being plants in the ordinary sense, that abandon the stiff engineering the land demands and become instead something closer to a suspended structure, holding their leaves up by displacement rather than by wood. ___ for the scouring of the current and the appetite of a few unglamorous invertebrates, the weed would close the water over like a lid, and the pond would become a wet meadow within a decade, and then a meadow, and then nothing anyone would think to paint. The stillness is the illusion. What looks like the most restful landscape available to us is in fact the fastest, a system held at a particular stage by forces entirely capable of being interrupted. Ornamental ponds are dredged and cut and poisoned to preserve an appearance of repose that nature will not maintain unassisted. We are looking, in every case, at an argument temporarily suspended, and calling the suspension peace, and hanging it above the sofa.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) Was it not
  2. B) Had it not
  3. C) Should it not
  4. D) Would it not
  5. E) Were it not
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: E

A fórmula fixa da condicional negativa invertida no presente é Were it not for X, equivalente a If it were not for X, e a oração principal com would close confirma a hipótese contrafactual atual. Was it not é impossível porque a inversão condicional só opera com o subjuntivo were. Had it not exigiria o particípio been, resultando em Had it not been for, forma que remete ao passado e que não está entre as opções. Should it not e Would it not produziriam interrogativas ou orações principais, nunca a subordinada condicional exigida pela vírgula seguinte.
