Cities: registro e conotação de substantivos urbanos (C2)

A city is the only artefact large enough to be experienced from the inside, which is why nobody can describe one honestly. The visitor sees a skyline and calls it ambition. The commuter sees the same skyline for the eleven thousandth time and sees nothing at all, which is not indifference but efficiency: perception is expensive, and a city survives its inhabitants only by becoming invisible to them. Between those two blindnesses sits everything worth saying about urban life. Consider the edge, where the argument is always sharpest, and where what the brochures call growth is what the people living out there experience as ___, the slow unplanned smear of warehouse and cul-de-sac across land that fed somebody a generation ago. The same process, two vocabularies, and the choice between them is not decorative. It determines what gets funded. Cities are, in the end, arguments about who is permitted to belong, conducted in concrete because concrete outlasts the people making the argument. Every zoning decision is a sentence in a language nobody admits to speaking, and every resident is fluent in it, and almost none of them could state a single rule of the grammar.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) expansion
  2. B) growth
  3. C) development
  4. D) enlargement
  5. E) sprawl
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: E

The same process, two vocabularies.
