Lions: verbo de relato em disputa científica (C2)
The lion arrived in our imagination as a king and has been paying rent on that metaphor ever since. Everything we notice about it is filtered through the sovereignty we assigned: the mane read as a crown, the sleeping read as leisure, the hunting done by others read as tribute. It is a remarkably durable misreading. Field biologists ___ that the male's celebrated idleness is a form of labour we have simply failed to price, since it includes border patrol, the deterrence of rival coalitions and the prevention of the infanticide that follows a takeover; and their critics reply, with equal confidence and comparable data, that this is a story told backwards from the outcome. The dispute is not going to be settled by better cameras. It is a dispute about what counts as work, which is a question we have not settled among ourselves, in a species that can at least be asked. Meanwhile the animal continues, indifferent to the ledger. What is genuinely strange is that the pride is one of the few social arrangements in the whole order, an exception rather than a rule, and we have taken that exception and made it the emblem of a category.
