The zoo is the only museum whose exhibits can die of boredom, and the only one whose curators are obliged to argue that captivity is a form of care. The argument is not absurd. Breeding programmes have pulled several species back from the edge, and the visitor who has stood close to something enormous rarely votes afterwards as though the world were empty. But the most honest defenders of the institution ___ that no enclosure, however ingeniously landscaped, can return to an animal the one thing its confinement removed: the possibility of going somewhere else. Everything else can be simulated. Climate, diet, substrate, even a plausible pretence of foraging can be engineered by a competent keeper. Distance cannot. A tiger's territory is not scenery to be reproduced at scale; it is a verb, an activity of crossing, and a hundred metres of naturalistic planting is not a small version of it but a different thing wearing its clothes. That admission does not close the case against the zoo. It simply relocates the question from architecture to ethics, where it has always belonged, and where the answers are harder to photograph and impossible to sell at the gift shop.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) contend
  2. B) posit
  3. C) maintain
  4. D) concede
  5. E) assert
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: D
