Fifty years ago, the wild tiger seemed condemned. Forests were cut, and hunters sold skins openly in markets. Since then, protected areas have been created in India, Nepal and Russia, and numbers have slowly risen in some regions. Conservationists, however, refuse to celebrate. Most of the remaining animals live in small, separated parks, and a population that cannot move is fragile. In addition, villages near the reserves lose cattle to tigers every month, and compensation often arrives late. Without the support of these communities, experts repeat, no fence and no law will keep the species alive in the long term.
