Crocodiles: colocação fixa com bide (C2)

There is a kind of attention that looks exactly like absence, and the crocodile has perfected it. For an hour, for an afternoon, for whatever unit of time a reptile can be said to keep, it ___ its time at the waterline, and nothing in its posture distinguishes waiting from indifference or from death. Then the river folds over and something that came down to drink is no longer there. We are wrong to call this patience. Patience is a virtue, which is to say a cost, a thing endured against the pull of impulse; the animal is not enduring anything at all. Its economy is arranged so that stillness is cheap and effort is catastrophic, and what we admire as discipline is simply the shape a metabolism takes when calories are scarce and violence is expensive. The mistake is instructive. We keep reaching for moral vocabulary to describe organisms that have no use for it, and then congratulating ourselves on the insight. The crocodile has been doing this for longer than there have been flowers, and it will be doing it after the last observer has run out of adjectives, which is perhaps the only genuinely humbling fact in the business.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) bids
  2. B) bides
  3. C) abides
  4. D) waits
  5. E) keeps
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: B

Bide one's time é uma colocação fixa e de baixa frequência que significa aguardar deliberadamente o momento oportuno, exatamente o comportamento descrito no parágrafo. Bids pertence a outro verbo, ligado a ofertas e lances, e a grafia bide one's time é a única reconhecida na norma culta. Abides significa suportar ou permanecer e não admite time como objeto direto nesse sentido. Waits é intransitivo nesse uso e pediria for, já que a língua consagra waits its turn, e não waits its time; keeps its time remete à marcação de ritmo, sentido alheio ao contexto.
