Libraries: elipse com auxiliar de voz passiva (C2)

A library is an argument about the future disguised as a room. Everything in it was chosen, and the choosing is invisible, which is precisely what gives the collection its air of neutrality: the shelves look like the world rather than like a committee's opinion of the world. But the catalogue could have been arranged otherwise, and in three cities during the 1970s it ___, and the difference is not clerical. Where a book sits determines who finds it, and who finds it determines what gets written next, and what gets written next arrives, in due course, on a shelf. The system is a loop, and the loop has a temperature. Consider what is not there. Every acquisition is a small verdict on what a community will want to have known about itself in fifty years, delivered by people who will not be present to be corrected. This is an extraordinary power, exercised quietly, on a modest budget, by staff who are among the worst paid professionals in the sector. We defend libraries with the language of access, which is true and insufficient. They are not only where the record is kept. They are where the record is decided.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) had
  2. B) has
  3. C) did
  4. D) was
  5. E) were
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: D

O antecedente elidido é a estrutura passiva arranged otherwise, de modo que o auxiliar remanescente precisa ser uma forma do verbo be: in three cities during the 1970s it was, isto é, it was arranged otherwise. A locução during the 1970s ancora o fato num passado encerrado e bloqueia has, que exigiria um perfeito ligado ao presente. Did retomaria uma construção ativa, incompatível com a voz passiva da oração anterior, e were viola a concordância com o sujeito singular it.
