Orange to Nobody: a cor do tigre como transação (C1)

The tiger is orange, and to most of the animals it hunts it is not. Deer and wild pigs are dichromats: the wavelengths that make the coat blaze against green foliage for a human observer collapse, in their eyes, into something close to the colour of dry grass. What we experience as spectacle is, in the relevant audience, camouflage. The stripes complete the effect by breaking the body's outline, so that a very large predator resolves into vertical fragments of light and shade. This is worth sitting with, because it reverses a habit of thought. We tend to assume that how a thing looks is a property of the thing. Colour, however, is a transaction between a surface, a light source and a nervous system, and the tiger's coat was negotiated with nervous systems that are not ours. The animal was never designed to be seen by us at all. Our astonishment at its beauty is, strictly speaking, an accident of our own retinas.

A frase final, "Our astonishment at its beauty is, strictly speaking, an accident of our own retinas", funciona no texto como

Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: D

A frase completa o raciocínio armado em "Colour, however, is a transaction between a surface, a light source and a nervous system" e em "the tiger's coat was negotiated with nervous systems that are not ours": o efeito sobre olhos humanos é colateral.
