Sand by the Lorry: a praia que precisa ser reposta todo ano (B2)

Every February, lorries arrive at the northern end of the bay and unload sand dredged from four kilometres offshore. The operation costs the municipality a substantial sum and lasts, on average, two winters. Hotel owners regard it as essential; without a beach, the season collapses. Coastal engineers are less enthusiastic, and their reservations are technical rather than ideological. Replenished sand is finer than the original, washes away faster, and buries the shallow habitats that stabilise the shore. The alternative, allowing the coastline to retreat and moving the buildings behind it, is politically impossible in a town where the buildings are the economy. So the lorries return, the invoice grows, and the decision is postponed by exactly one more year. Nobody involved believes the current arrangement will still be affordable in a decade.

Resposta correta: C

O texto explica que recuar a linha costeira e mover os prédios é "politically impossible in a town where the buildings are the economy", e por isso "the lorries return, the invoice grows". A alternativa sobre a segurança ambiental contraria as ressalvas dos engenheiros, que apontam que a areia reposta "buries the shallow habitats that stabilise the shore". A alternativa sobre resistência inverte o dado de que essa areia "is finer than the original, washes away faster".
