The Third Coffee Shop: o que se perde quando a rua melhora (B2)

My street acquired its third coffee shop last month, and I am told that this is called improvement. The pavement is certainly cleaner. The bakery that sold bread at seven in the morning to people going to work has become a place selling pastries at eleven to people photographing them. Nobody forced anyone out; the rent simply rose until the arithmetic stopped working, which is a quieter mechanism and much harder to protest against. I want to be fair. The street was not a paradise before, and some of my nostalgia is really nostalgia for being younger. But a neighbourhood is not only a set of buildings; it is a network of people who know each other's routines. That network is expensive to build, impossible to buy, and remarkably easy to dismantle by accident.

  5. E) poderia ser revertida caso o aluguel dos imóveis retornasse ao valor anterior.

Resposta correta: C

A tese está no fecho, quando o bairro é definido como "a network of people who know each other's routines", rede que é "remarkably easy to dismantle by accident". A alternativa sobre expulsão formal contraria a frase "Nobody forced anyone out; the rent simply rose". A alternativa que reduz tudo à nostalgia ignora que o autor faz essa concessão apenas parcialmente, dizendo "some of my nostalgia is really nostalgia for being younger", antes de sustentar seu argumento principal.
