Binomials (safe and sound…)
Pares que andam juntos — e sempre na mesma ordem.
Binomials são duplas de palavras unidas por "and" ou "or" com ordem fixa: safe and sound, sooner or later, back and forth. Nativos nunca dizem "sound and safe" — a ordem é parte da expressão. Usá-los bem dá ritmo e naturalidade instantânea à sua fala e escrita.

Almost a perfect sentence, Max — but the binomial is frozen: 'safe and sound'. Swapping the order sounds as odd as saying 'forth and back'.

Why that order, though? Is there a rule, or do natives just memorise thousands of frozen pairs?

There are tendencies: the shorter word usually comes first, and English favours the vowel pattern i-before-a-or-o — that's why it's 'tick-tock', never 'tock-tick'. But in practice, you learn them as single blocks of vocabulary.
Existem tendências: a palavra mais curta costuma vir primeiro, e o inglês prefere o padrão vocálico i-antes-de-a-ou-o — por isso é 'tick-tock', nunca 'tock-tick'. Mas, na prática, você os aprende como blocos únicos de vocabulário.

Quando usar
- Para tranquilizar alguém após um susto: "Relax, the kids are back home, safe and sound".
- Para falar de negociações e concessões mútuas: "Every partnership involves a bit of give and take".
- Para descrever esforço ou progresso gradual: "Bit by bit, we rebuilt the client's trust".
- Em contextos formais e jurídicos, com pares consagrados: "The terms and conditions are null and void".
- Para descrever movimento repetido ou indecisão: "He kept pacing back and forth before the interview".

A ordem é fixa: 'pros and cons'. O brasileiro inverte porque em português 'contras e prós' não soa tão errado — em inglês, a inversão trava o ouvido nativo.

'Preto no branco' vira 'in black and white' — com 'and', nessa ordem, e geralmente com 'in'. Traduzir a estrutura do português desmonta a expressão.
Little by little the audience went away and the theatre got empty.
Little by little, the audience drifted away and the theatre emptied.
O binomial 'little by little' está correto — o deslize C2 está em não elevar o resto: 'drifted away' e 'emptied' mantêm o registro que o binomial estabeleceu. Coerência de registro também é gramática.
