Idioms & fixed expressions
Quando o sentido da frase não está em nenhuma das palavras.
Idioms são expressões cujo significado não se deduz palavra por palavra: "bite the bullet" não envolve balas, e "under the weather" não fala de clima. No C2, a meta não é decorar listas, mas usar idioms com naturalidade, no registro certo e sem traduzir os do português ao pé da letra.
Na prática
The project failed, but as we say, I gave my hand to the palmatory. I take full responsibility.
O projeto falhou, mas como dizemos, 'dei a mão à palmatória'. Assumo total responsabilidade.
I love the honesty, Max, but that idiom doesn't exist in English! You'd say 'I'll hold my hands up' or 'I'll own up to it'. Translating idioms literally is the fastest way to confuse a native speaker.
Adoro a honestidade, Max, mas esse idiom não existe em inglês! Você diria 'I'll hold my hands up' ou 'I'll own up to it'. Traduzir idioms ao pé da letra é o jeito mais rápido de confundir um nativo.
How do I know when an idiom fits the situation? Some feel too casual for a report, like 'it cost an arm and a leg'.
Como sei quando um idiom cabe na situação? Alguns parecem informais demais para um relatório, como 'it cost an arm and a leg'.
Perfect instinct. In a report you'd write 'it was prohibitively expensive'. Idioms carry register: 'kick the bucket' is almost comic, while 'pass away' is gentle. C2 is knowing which shelf each one sits on.
Instinto perfeito. Num relatório você escreveria 'it was prohibitively expensive'. Idioms carregam registro: 'kick the bucket' é quase cômico, enquanto 'pass away' é delicado. O C2 é saber em que prateleira cada um fica.
My trick: collect idioms in pairs with their Portuguese cousins. 'A pig in a poke' is our 'gato por lebre'; 'to beat around the bush' is 'enrolar'. Map the idea, never the words.
Meu macete: colecione idioms em pares com os primos em português. 'A pig in a poke' é o nosso 'gato por lebre'; 'to beat around the bush' é 'enrolar'. Mapeie a ideia, nunca as palavras.
Quando usar
- Em conversas informais para soar natural e próximo: "Setting up the printer was a piece of cake".
- Para suavizar más notícias com expressões fixas: "Let's face it, the numbers speak for themselves".
- Em storytelling e apresentações, para criar imagem vívida: "We were flying blind for the first six months".
- Para demonstrar cumplicidade cultural em negociações: "Let's not reinvent the wheel here".
- Em escrita jornalística leve, com moderação: "The new policy is a double-edged sword".
Como formar
verbo + complemento imutável
bite the bullet, break the ice, call it a day — encarar de vez, quebrar o gelo, dar o dia por encerrado
as + adjetivo + as + substantivo fixo
as clear as mud, as cool as a cucumber — claro como lama (ou seja, nada claro), calmo como um pepino (tranquilíssimo)
preposição + substantivo em combinação fixa
on the fence, in the loop, off the record — em cima do muro, por dentro do assunto, em off
parte fixa + elemento que se conjuga/possessivo
She really put her foot in it. / They pulled our leg. — Ela pisou na bola feio. / Eles nos zoaram.
Os tropeços do Max
O Max erra como todo aprendiz — a Teacher Sofia corrige.
He was pushing the sardine to his side during the whole negotiation.
He was looking out for his own interests during the whole negotiation.
'Puxar a sardinha' não tem versão literal em inglês. Idioms brasileiros traduzidos palavra por palavra geram frases sem sentido para nativos — traduza a ideia, não a imagem.
The exam was a seven-headed beast for me.
The exam was a real uphill battle for me.
'Bicho de sete cabeças' vira 'uphill battle', 'a nightmare' ou 'rocket science' (em negativas: 'it's not rocket science'). A besta de sete cabeças não assusta ninguém em inglês.
We are in the same boat, so let's row for the same side.
We are in the same boat, so let's pull together.
'In the same boat' existe e é idêntico ao português, mas a continuação 'remar para o mesmo lado' não: o idiom nativo de esforço conjunto é 'pull together'.

1 Seu colega diz: 'I'm feeling a bit under the weather.' O que ele quer dizer?
'Under the weather' significa estar indisposto, meio doente. Não tem relação com clima nem com finanças — é o clássico idiom não literal.
2 Qual expressão completa naturalmente: 'Deciding to sell the house was hard, but we finally ___.'
'Bite the bullet' é tomar coragem para algo difícil. 'Kick the bucket' é morrer (informal) e 'spill the beans' é entregar um segredo — desastres nesse contexto.
3 Em um relatório formal, qual é o melhor substituto para 'it cost an arm and a leg'?
Idioms e gírias descem de registro. Em documento formal, 'prohibitively high' comunica o mesmo com o tom adequado — essa troca consciente é habilidade C2.
