Modals of deduction (must, might, can't)

Vire detetive em inglês

Must, might, may, could e can't servem para deduzir: quando você não tem certeza absoluta, mas as pistas apontam para uma conclusão. 'Must be' é quase certeza que sim, 'can't be' é quase certeza que não, e 'might/may/could be' ficam no talvez.

The lights are off and his car isn't there. He must be out, right?

Perfect deduction! Strong evidence, so 'must be'. And if it were impossible?

Dedução perfeita! Evidência forte, então 'must be'. E se fosse impossível?

He mustn't be home! Impossible!

He mustn't be home! Impossível!

Careful, Max: for impossible deductions we use 'can't'. 'He can't be home.'

Cuidado, Max: para deduções de impossibilidade usamos 'can't'. 'He can't be home.'

Fox logic: must = 'com certeza sim', can't = 'com certeza não', might = 'vai saber'. Mustn't stays out of this game.

Lógica da raposa: must = 'com certeza sim', can't = 'com certeza não', might = 'vai saber'. Mustn't fica fora desse jogo.

So the package might have arrived while we were out. I'll check!

Vou verificar!

Quando usar

  • Para conclusões quase certas com base em evidências: "She must be exhausted — she ran a marathon this morning."
  • Para dizer que algo é logicamente impossível: "That can't be John's car; he sold his last month."
  • Para possibilidades em aberto: "They might be stuck in traffic."
He must have forgotten our meeting."
  • Para descartar hipóteses passadas: "She can't have written this note — it's not her handwriting."

Como formar

Quase certeza (sim) must + verbo base / must be + -ing

You must be joking! — Você só pode estar brincando!

Quase certeza (não) can't + verbo base

It can't be true. — Não pode ser verdade.

Possibilidade might/may/could + verbo base

She could be at the gym now. — Ela pode estar na academia agora.

Dedução sobre o passado must/might/can't + have + particípio

They must have left early.

He must to be very rich.

He must be very rich.

Modais nunca aceitam 'to' depois: must be, might go, can't know. O 'must to' vem da tradução mental de 'deve + de'.

She mustn't be Brazilian — she doesn't speak Portuguese.

She can't be Brazilian — she doesn't speak Portuguese.

Dedução negativa usa 'can't'. 'Mustn't' é proibição ('não pode/não deve'), não impossibilidade lógica.

They might arrived already.

They might have arrived already.

Para deduzir sobre o passado, o modal precisa de 'have + particípio': might have arrived. O modal sozinho não carrega passado.
