Participle clauses

Sofia, my essays feel repetitive. I keep writing 'because', 'when', 'after' all the time.

Sofia, minhas redações parecem repetitivas. Fico escrevendo 'because', 'when', 'after' o tempo todo.

Participle clauses are your answer! Instead of 'After she finished the report, she went home', try 'Having finished the report, she went home.'

Participle clauses são a resposta! Em vez de 'After she finished the report, she went home', experimente 'Having finished the report, she went home.'

Nice! Walking down the street, the buildings looked beautiful.

Legal! 'Walking down the street, the buildings looked beautiful.'

Careful, Max — that sentence says the buildings were walking! The subject of both parts must be the same: 'Walking down the street, I noticed the beautiful buildings.'

O sujeito das duas partes precisa ser o mesmo: 'Walking down the street, I noticed the beautiful buildings.'

That's the famous dangling participle — the grammar version of a selfie where you forgot to appear in the photo.

  • Para substituir orações de causa, como em "Being the oldest, she felt responsible for her siblings".
  • Para mostrar duas ações simultâneas, como em "He left the room, slamming the door behind him".
  • Para indicar que uma ação veio antes da outra, como em "Having saved enough money, they bought the house".
  • Para substituir orações relativas em descrições, como em "The man wearing the red cap is my uncle".
  • Para dar ideia passiva de forma compacta, como em "Built in 1920, the theater still hosts concerts".

Como formar

Presente ativo Verbo-ing + vírgula + oração principal

Knowing the answer, she raised her hand. — Sabendo a resposta, ela levantou a mão.

Perfeito (ação anterior) Having + particípio + vírgula + oração principal

Having lived in Recife, he knows the city well. — Tendo morado em Recife, ele conhece bem a cidade.

Passivo Particípio passado + vírgula + oração principal

Written in a hurry, the email was full of typos.

Com conjunção When / While / After + verbo-ing

While cooking dinner, I listened to a podcast.

After finish the course, I got a better job.

After finishing the course, I got a better job.

Depois de preposições e conjunções como 'after', 'before' e 'without', o verbo vai para o -ing, nunca fica na forma base.

Arriving late, the teacher scolded the student.

Arriving late, the student was scolded by the teacher.

Having did my homework, I watched TV.

Having done my homework, I watched TV.
