Passive reporting (He is said to…)

O tom de jornal: relate fatos e boatos sem apontar o dedo.

Estruturas como 'He is said to be rich' e 'It is believed that...' relatam informações sem revelar (ou sem precisar saber) quem disse. É a voz da imprensa, da academia e dos relatórios formais. No C1, essas construções são obrigatórias para escrever com distanciamento e credibilidade.

Duas estruturas colidiram aí, Max! Ou 'It is said that the library is haunted' ou 'The library is said to be haunted'. Escolha uma pista!

Portuguese has 'dizem que...' — that's 'it is said that'. And for the fancy version, imagine 'consta que ele...' becoming 'he is said to...'.

O português tem o 'dizem que...' — isso é 'it is said that'. E para a versão chique, imagine o 'consta que ele...' virando 'he is said to...'.

I am said to be improving very fast!

Quando usar

  • Para relatar opiniões gerais sem citar a fonte, como em "It is widely believed that exercise improves mood".
  • Para escrever notícias e relatórios com distanciamento, como em "The minister is expected to announce new measures".
  • Para relatar fatos passados sobre alguém, como em "She is said to have declined the offer twice".
  • Para rumores e lendas, como em "The mansion is rumored to be haunted".
  • Para dar peso acadêmico a afirmações, como em "The method is considered to be highly reliable".

Como formar

Impessoal com it It + is said/believed/thought + that + oração

It is thought that the painting is a forgery. — Acredita-se que o quadro seja uma falsificação.

Pessoal com infinitivo Sujeito + is said/believed + to + verbo

The painting is thought to be a forgery. — Acredita-se que o quadro seja uma falsificação.

Infinitivo perfeito (passado) Sujeito + is said + to have + particípio

The band is said to have recorded a secret album. — Dizem que a banda gravou um álbum secreto.

Com verbos de expectativa Sujeito + is expected/reported/rumored + to + verbo

Prices are expected to rise next quarter. — Espera-se que os preços subam no próximo trimestre.

Os tropeços do Max

It is said that he owns three houses.

Português omite o sujeito ('Dizem que...'), mas o inglês exige o 'It' impessoal para segurar a estrutura.

He is said that he is very generous.

He is said to be very generous.

Com sujeito pessoal, a continuação é 'to + verbo', nunca 'that'. O 'that' só funciona na versão com 'It'.

She is believed to win the election last year.

She is believed to have won the election last year.

Para fatos passados, o infinitivo simples não basta: é preciso o infinitivo perfeito 'to have won'.
