Relative clauses (who, which, that)
As relative clauses usam who, which e that para dar informação extra sobre pessoas e coisas sem começar frase nova: 'the girl who sings', 'the app that I use'.
My sentences feel choppy: 'I have a friend. He lives in Japan.' How do I connect them?
Minhas frases parecem picotadas: 'Eu tenho um amigo. Ele mora no Japão.' Como eu conecto?
Use a relative clause: I have a friend who lives in Japan.
I understand! This is the cake who I made!
Entendi! Este é o bolo que eu fiz!
Almost, Max! Cake is a thing, so: the cake that I made, or the cake which I made.
Quase, Max! Bolo é coisa, então: the cake that I made, ou the cake which I made.
Fox rule: who for people, which for things, and that is the joker card for both!
Regra da raposa: who para pessoas, which para coisas, e that é o coringa que serve para os dois!
Nice, so 'the movie that won the Oscar' and 'the actor who won' are both right!
Legal, então 'the movie that won the Oscar' e 'the actor who won' estão certinhas!
Quando usar
- Para identificar pessoas: "She's the teacher who helped me."
- Para identificar coisas e animais: "That's the song which was playing at the party."
- Para usar o coringa that com pessoas ou coisas em contexto informal: "He's the guy that fixed my phone."
- Para indicar posse com whose: "That's the author whose book I recommended."
- Para falar de lugares com where: "This is the café where we first met."
Como formar
substantivo + who/that + verbo
The doctor who saw me was very kind.
substantivo + which/that + verbo
I lost the pen which was on the table.
substantivo + (that) + sujeito + verbo
The movie we watched was amazing. — O filme que assistimos foi incrível.
substantivo + whose + substantivo
I met a girl whose brother plays for Flamengo. — Conheci uma garota cujo irmão joga no Flamengo.
She's the singer which won the award.
She's the singer who won the award.
Which é só para coisas e animais; para pessoas use who (ou that).
This is the house that I grew up in it.
This is the house that I grew up in.
I have a friend who his father is a pilot.
I have a friend whose father is a pilot.
Para posse usamos whose direto, sem 'who his' — tradução literal de 'que o pai dele'.

1 Complete: The neighbor ___ dog barks all night moved away.
3 Complete: That's the bakery ___ sells the best bread in town.
Bakery é coisa/lugar funcionando como sujeito de 'sells', então that (ou which). 'Where' só serviria se depois viesse frase completa, como 'where they sell...'.
