Cats and Wild Birds: como conciliar gatos e fauna urbana (B1)
Cats are the most popular pets in many countries, and their independence is part of the attraction. Yet biologists have collected data showing that free-roaming cats hunt an enormous number of small birds and lizards every year, even when they are well fed. This does not mean that cats are villains; they are simply following instinct. Several cities have therefore asked owners to keep animals indoors at night, when most hunting happens. Although some people consider the rule cruel, studies indicate that indoor cats live longer. In addition, colourful collars have been tested, because birds notice them and escape in time.
