Dolphins: elipse verbal e escolha do auxiliar (C2)

The dolphin was given its reputation before it was ever given a hearing. Sailors credited it with rescue; the nineteenth century read tenderness into that permanent upturned mouth, as the twenty-first century still ___, though it now files the reading under cognition rather than sentiment and supports it with sonograms instead of sea stories. The face has not changed. Only the vocabulary of our flattery has. This matters, because the smile is an accident of skeletal architecture, a fixed curve of bone that would look identical on an animal in agony. We have built an entire moral relationship on a shape. And having built it, we defend it: the dolphin becomes the sea's ambassador, the acceptable recipient of feelings we withhold from creatures of less photogenic geometry. Meanwhile the actual animal does things that ought to trouble the ambassadorship, among them coordinated aggression, infanticide, and a politics of alliance intricate enough to embarrass our sentimentality. None of this makes it less remarkable. It makes it a real animal rather than a mirror. The uncomfortable possibility is that intelligence, wherever it appears, arrives with the whole package, and that we have been admiring a face while ignoring a mind.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) does
  2. B) do
  3. C) is
  4. D) has
  5. E) did
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: A

A lacuna é um caso de elipse verbal em oração comparativa introduzida por as: o verbo pleno reads tenderness into it é apagado e sobra apenas o auxiliar de apoio do. Como o sujeito é the twenty-first century, singular, e o advérbio still situa a ação no presente em curso, a única forma possível é does. Do falha por concordância; did falha porque colide com still e com um século ainda em andamento. Is exigiria antecedente progressivo ou passivo e has exigiria antecedente perfectivo, e o antecedente aqui é um presente simples subentendido.
