I joined my first beach clean-up because a friend insisted. I expected to find bottles and bags, and we did. What I did not expect were the tiny fragments: pieces of plastic smaller than a coin, mixed with the sand, impossible to remove completely. After two hours, our group had filled eleven sacks, and the beach still did not look clean. A biologist who was with us said something I have not forgotten. "We are not solving the problem here," she explained. "We are only measuring it." Since that morning, I have looked at my own shopping basket differently.
