Farms: hedging acadêmico em sintagma verbal (C2)
The story we tell is a story of ascent: hunters wander, farmers settle, the settling produces surplus, and the surplus produces everything we mean by civilisation. The archaeological record ___ a rather less flattering arrangement. Skeletons from the first farming communities are shorter than those of the foragers who preceded them, more damaged by repetitive labour, more marked by the diseases that arrive when people and animals share a small space for generations. The evidence is fragmentary and contested, and nobody should build a philosophy on a scatter of carbonised seeds. Still, the outline is uncomfortable. Agriculture may not have been chosen so much as fallen into: a good year encourages a larger family, a larger family requires the next year's planting, and within three generations there is no way back to a way of life that no longer supports the number of people it produced. That is not progress. It is a ratchet. What the field gave us was not ease but obligation, and the obligation turned out to be inheritable, and every institution we have built since has been an attempt to organise the consequences of a decision nobody remembers making.
