Jungles: hedging acadêmico com advérbio (C2)
___, the word arrived in European languages already carrying its verdict, and no amount of later botany has managed to strip that verdict out. Jungle came in from Sanskrit by way of administration, and what it named, in the mouths of the men who brought it home, was not an ecosystem but an obstacle: land that had refused cultivation, ground that would not submit to a straight line. The philological record is too thin to settle the matter cleanly, and one should be careful with etymologies, which tend to flatter whoever tells them. Still, the pattern is hard to miss. Rainforest is a description; jungle is a judgement wearing the costume of a description. One word invites study, the other invites clearing. And the judgement outlived the empire that issued it: the jungle is still where fictional characters go to lose their reason, still the adjective attached to markets and schoolyards we have decided are ungoverned. The forest itself is indifferent to all of this. It is the most structured thing on the planet, layered and scheduled and negotiated down to the millimetre, and the only real chaos in the vicinity has always been in the naming.
