Farms: past perfect (B2)

Organic certification is a bureaucratic process rather than a philosophical one. An inspector examines records, soil tests and input receipts, and the land must be free of prohibited substances for a defined conversion period before anything can be labelled. That waiting period is where most farms fail, because they carry the higher costs of organic production while still selling at conventional prices. One cooperative in Paraná illustrates the problem well. When its certificate finally arrived in 2019, the members ___ organic methods for almost a decade, having converted long before any buyer offered them a premium. Their advantage now is not the label itself but the soil beneath it: years of cover cropping produced a structure that holds water through dry spells, which matters more each season.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) had been using
  2. B) have been using
  3. C) has been using
  4. D) would have been using
  5. E) are using
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: A

A frase mede a duração de uma prática que começou antes de outro fato passado ("when its certificate arrived in 2019"), o que exige o past perfect contínuo: had been + verbo com -ing. "Have been using" e "has been using" são present perfect contínuo e ancoram a duração no presente, chocando-se com a referência a 2019; além disso, "has" não concorda com o sujeito plural "the members". "Are using" descreve apenas o momento atual, e "would have been using" introduziria uma hipótese, não um fato verificado.
