___ tropical forests cover only a small part of the planet, they contain more than half of all known species of plants and animals. Scientists still describe new insects, frogs and trees every month, and many medicines come from substances first found under those green roofs. At the same time, thousands of square kilometres disappear each year to produce wood, beef and soya. Local communities who have lived in the forest for generations are often the best guardians, because they know exactly which trees can be cut and which must stay.
