Libraries: discurso indireto (B2)

Public libraries survive because they keep redefining what they are for. Circulation of physical books has fallen in most countries, yet visits have not, because the building now provides free internet access, a warm room, help with online benefit applications and a place for teenagers who have nowhere else to go. Local archives remain their least visible function and often the most valuable. During a refurbishment in one English town, the council asked the librarians ___, since the run of local newspapers held there was the only complete record of the area between 1890 and 1960, and no digital copy existed anywhere. Librarians increasingly describe their work in these terms: not lending, but guaranteeing that a community can still find out what happened to it.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) not throw anything away
  2. B) do not throw anything away
  3. C) that not to throw anything away
  4. D) not to throw anything away
  5. E) for not throwing anything away
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: D

Pedidos e ordens negativas no discurso indireto se constroem com ask/tell + objeto + not + infinitivo com to. "Not throw anything away" omite o "to" obrigatório depois de "asked the librarians". "Do not throw anything away" mantém a forma imperativa do discurso direto, que exigiria aspas. "That not to throw anything away" mistura duas estruturas incompatíveis, e "for not throwing anything away" indicaria motivo ou agradecimento, não o conteúdo de um pedido.
