Pandas: discurso indireto (B2)

Giant panda conservation is the most expensive rescue operation ever mounted for a single species, and it divides biologists. Supporters note that protecting panda habitat also protects an entire mountain ecosystem containing thousands of less charismatic species, and that the animal raises money nothing else could raise. Critics reply that the same funds would save far more biodiversity if spread across less photogenic reserves. Whatever the argument, the numbers have improved: wild populations grew enough for the species to be reclassified from endangered to vulnerable in 2016. At a press conference that year, the director of one breeding centre announced that the programme ___ twelve captive-born animals the following season, a figure that would have been unthinkable when the first centres opened in the 1980s with almost no successful births.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) will release
  2. B) would release
  3. C) would have released
  4. D) had released
  5. E) will have released
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: B

No discurso indireto com verbo introdutor no passado ("announced"), o futuro com will passa a would, criando o chamado futuro do pretérito. A expressão "the following season" confirma esse deslocamento temporal, já que substitui "next season" da fala original. "Will release" e "will have released" mantêm o futuro sem o recuo exigido pelo verbo introdutor no passado. "Had released" indicaria uma ação anterior ao anúncio, e "would have released" expressaria algo hipotético que não se realizou, contrariando o sentido de plano anunciado.
