Pets: colocação fixa out of all proportion (C2)
The strangest thing about keeping an animal is not the expense or the mess. It is the discovery, usually made too late to be of any use, that one has contracted an attachment out of all ___ to the creature's actual span, and that no part of the surrounding culture has anything sensible to say about it. Bereavement leave does not cover a cat. Colleagues offer the small embarrassed sentence reserved for losses that are felt to be excessive, and the mourner, who half agrees, files the grief somewhere private and gets on with the week. But the disproportion is the point, not a defect. What the animal supplies is a relationship without language, which means a relationship without negotiation, without the accumulated sediment of things said and half-retracted that constitutes every human intimacy. Nothing has ever been explained; nothing therefore has ever been misunderstood. That is not a lesser bond. It is a bond of a different kind, and the reason it hurts so much on the last day at the surgery is precisely that it never contained a single word one might now wish unsaid. There is nothing to revise. There is only the absence, arriving all at once, in a quiet room.
