Snakes: inversão após adverbial negativo (C2)

No animal has been asked to carry so much on so little. The snake has no limbs to gesture with, no face capable of expression, no voice beyond a warning; and yet, across languages that share nothing else, it has been made to stand for cunning, for medicine, for eternity, for the moment a garden stopped being safe. ___ has the snake been granted the dignity of neutrality. It arrives in our sentences already sentenced. What interests me is the mechanism: an animal that cannot be read acquires, precisely because it cannot be read, an unlimited capacity to be interpreted. Blankness invites projection. The lizard blinks and we relax; the snake does not blink, and into that steady lidless attention we pour whatever we cannot admit about ourselves. Herpetologists patiently explain the spectacle scale, the transparent disc fused over the eye, and the explanation changes nothing, because the fear was never about optics. It was about a creature that refuses the small social signals by which we decide, without ever deciding, that a thing means us no harm. We have not misread the snake. We have read it far too eagerly, and then called the result knowledge.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) Throughout that long history
  2. B) At no point in that long history
  3. C) For much of that long history
  4. D) During that long history
  5. E) In the course of that long history
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: B

A ordem que segue a lacuna é invertida: o auxiliar has vem antes do sujeito the snake. Em inglês, essa inversão só é licenciada quando o elemento fronteado tem valor negativo ou restritivo, como em at no point, nowhere, seldom, only then. Throughout, during, for much of e in the course of são adverbiais puramente temporais e afirmativos: com eles a frase exigiria a ordem normal (the snake has been granted), de modo que produzem estrutura agramatical. A escolha, portanto, não é de sentido, mas de gatilho sintático.
