___ for centuries as symbols of treachery, snakes are only now being reassessed by conservation biologists. Field studies in southern Brazil suggest that a single rattlesnake may remove several hundred crop-eating rodents from a farm each season, work that would otherwise require poison. Venom research has changed the picture as well: molecules isolated from a Brazilian pit viper in the 1960s led directly to a family of blood-pressure medicines now taken by millions of patients. Despite this, populations continue to fall, squeezed by habitat loss, roads and deliberate killing, while antivenom still comes from a handful of underfunded public laboratories. Herpetologists therefore argue that education matters as much as legislation, since a farmer who understands what a snake actually does is far less likely to reach for a spade.
