We like to say the contest is decided on the day, by the better performance, and that everything before the whistle is preparation rather than destiny. The ledgers of the last hundred years suggest ___. Money predicts outcome with a reliability that would be considered scandalous in any other domain claiming to be a meritocracy, and the predictions have grown more reliable, not less, as the sums involved have grown. This is the awkwardness at the centre of the whole enterprise. Sport sells the proposition that effort is legible and reward is proportional, the one clean transaction left in a world of opaque ones, while its economics quietly guarantee that the same handful of institutions will occupy the same handful of positions for the foreseeable future. And yet the appetite does not diminish. Perhaps that is because the proposition is not really a description but a wish, and wishes survive contradiction rather better than descriptions do. Or perhaps it is because the exceptions, being rare, are precious in a way that regularity could never make them: the small club that goes further than it should is not evidence against the system. It is the system's most effective advertisement.
