When we imagine pollution in the sea, we usually think of oil or plastic. Sound is rarely mentioned, and yet it travels much further under water than in the air. Ships, drilling platforms and sonar produce a constant noise that covers the frequencies whales and dolphins use to find food and to communicate. Some animals have been observed swimming away from feeding areas they had used for generations. The good news is that this kind of pollution disappears immediately when the source stops. During recent periods of reduced traffic, scientists recorded quieter oceans and calmer animals almost at once.
