The modern zoo is an uncomfortable institution. Its critics point out that enclosures rarely reproduce the space or complexity of a wild territory, and that a large predator pacing behind glass teaches visitors very little about ecology. Its defenders answer with captive breeding. The Arabian oryx is the case they always cite: the last free-living animals were captured in the early 1970s, and if that decision had not been taken, the species ___ beyond the end of that decade. Reintroduced herds now graze in Oman and Jordan. Even so, the number of species genuinely saved this way remains small, and the money involved is enormous. Many biologists argue that the same budget spent on habitat protection would keep far more animals alive, and would do so without the ethical cost of lifelong captivity.
