Should, must & have to

Esses três modais formam a escada da obrigação: should aconselha, have to informa uma obrigação externa e must expressa obrigação forte ou regra.

Sofia, what's the difference between 'you should go' and 'you must go'?

Sofia, qual é a diferença entre 'you should go' e 'you must go'?

'You should go' is friendly advice. 'You must go' is a strong obligation, almost an order.

'You should go' é um conselho amigável. 'You must go' é uma obrigação forte, quase uma ordem.

I understand! At the airport: You should show your passport.

Entendi! No aeroporto: você deveria mostrar seu passaporte.

Careful, robot! That's not a suggestion, it's the law: You must show your passport.

Oh no, and the negative? I musn't... I don't must...?

Ah não, e a negativa? I musn't... I don't must...?

Watch out: mustn't means it's forbidden, and don't have to means it's optional. Very different!

Atenção: mustn't significa que é proibido, e don't have to significa que é opcional. Bem diferentes!

Quando usar

  • Dar conselhos: "You should drink more water."
  • Falar de obrigações externas (trabalho, lei, escola): "I have to wear a uniform at work."
  • Expressar regras e proibições: "Passengers must fasten their seatbelts." e "You mustn't smoke here."
  • Dizer que algo NÃO é necessário: "You don't have to pay, it's free."
  • Fazer dedução lógica forte: "She trains every day, she must be very fit."

Como formar

Should (conselho) sujeito + should/shouldn't + verbo base

You shouldn't skip breakfast.

Must (obrigação forte/regra) sujeito + must/mustn't + verbo base

Students must arrive on time. — Os alunos devem chegar no horário.

Have to (obrigação externa) sujeito + have to/has to + verbo base

She has to work on Saturdays. — Ela tem que trabalhar aos sábados.

Ausência de obrigação don't/doesn't have to + verbo base

You don't have to come if you're busy.

You must to study for the test.

You must study for the test.

Modais como must e should nunca aceitam 'to' depois; o 'to' só existe em have TO.

He have to leave early today.

He has to leave early today.

Have to se conjuga como verbo normal: com he/she/it vira has to.

You don't have to smoke in the hospital.

You mustn't smoke in the hospital.

A ideia é proibição, então mustn't; 'don't have to' diria que fumar é opcional, o que não faz sentido num hospital.
