Choosing a pet: inversão condicional sem if (C1)

Shelters describe a predictable annual cycle. Adoptions rise sharply in December and returns rise in February, and the animals returned are overwhelmingly those acquired on a weekend visit, in the company of children, from a room in which forty others were also available. ___ to choose an animal that way, you would be joining a statistic that every shelter manager can recite from memory. The advice offered in response sounds unromantic. Establish the daily cost, the exercise requirement and the likely lifespan before setting foot in the building; establish who will do the work when the novelty passes; establish what happens if the household moves, or separates, or has a child. None of this is difficult, and almost nobody does it, because the decision is made by a part of the mind that does not consult spreadsheets. Shelters have learned to work with that. The best of them now interview adopters about their routines rather than their intentions, which are uniformly excellent.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) Was you
  2. B) Did you
  3. C) Were you
  4. D) Should you
  5. E) Would you
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: C

A condicional formal sem "if" se forma pela inversão do verbo, e o padrão "were + sujeito + to + infinitivo" expressa hipótese sobre uma ação futura ou improvável, combinando com o "would be joining" da oração principal. "Was you" é agramatical, já que o subjuntivo "were" é invariável nessa construção. "Did you" e "Would you" não podem ser seguidos do infinitivo com "to" que já aparece no texto, o que sozinho os elimina. "Should you" existe em condicionais invertidas, mas rege infinitivo sem "to", como em "should you choose".
