Both depend on money arriving in villages rather than in capitals, and the machinery of international conservation is not designed for that. Meanwhile trophy hunting continues to divide the field, since well-managed concessions have preserved habitat that would otherwise have been ploughed, while poorly managed ones have removed the males a pride depends on. The evidence supports neither prohibition nor enthusiasm, which is precisely why the debate is conducted in moral rather than empirical terms.
