___ as vermin for most of the twentieth century, crocodiles were shot on sight across northern Australia and much of southern Africa. Their recovery is one of the few unambiguous successes in vertebrate conservation, and it was achieved by an argument that many conservationists still find distasteful. Rather than prohibiting exploitation, several governments licensed it: landholders were permitted to harvest eggs and sell skins, provided a fixed proportion of hatchlings was returned to the wild. The animal acquired a price, and with a price came an incentive to protect the wetlands it depends on. Populations rebounded so completely that management now concerns itself with attacks on people rather than with scarcity. The model has obvious limits. It works for a species that breeds prolifically and yields a luxury commodity, and it fails for anything slow, unprofitable or aesthetically inconvenient. Still, it forces an uncomfortable admission: sentiment saved fewer crocodiles than commerce did, and conservation policy has never fully absorbed the lesson.
