Crocodiles: segunda condicional (B1)

Crocodiles have existed for more than two hundred million years, and their design has hardly changed. People usually see them as monsters, but they play an essential role in rivers and lakes. They eat sick fish, dig holes that keep water during the dry season and control the number of other predators. If crocodiles disappeared from a river, the whole ecosystem ___ in a few years. In some regions hunters killed almost every animal for their skin, and governments had to create strict laws. Today the population is slowly recovering, although conflicts with local villages continue.
