Water plants: segunda condicional na oração com if (B1)

Water plants do much more than decorate a lake. Their roots hold the soil, their leaves give shade to fish, and many species absorb metals and other pollutants from the water. Engineers have copied this idea and built artificial wetlands that clean waste water from small towns at a very low cost. If every city ___ this natural technology, rivers would be considerably cleaner. Some floating species, however, grow so fast that they cover the whole surface, block the light and kill everything below, which is why they must be controlled carefully.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) would use
  2. B) will use
  3. C) is using
  4. D) has used
  5. E) used
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: E

A oração principal traz "would be", marca da segunda condicional, que fala de uma situação hipotética; nesse padrão a oração com "if" fica no past simple, ou seja, "used". "Would use" está errado porque "would" não aparece depois de "if" nessa estrutura. "Will use" pertence à primeira condicional e não combina com "would be" na oração principal.
