Dolphins occupy an awkward position in environmental ethics. Their brains are large, their social bonds durable, and their capacity for individual recognition well documented; captive animals learn arbitrary symbols and appear to grieve. On the strength of such findings, several countries have closed marine parks outright, and a few campaigners argue that the animals should be granted a legal status closer to personhood than to property. Others regard this as sentimental. The evidence for complex cognition, they note, is strong in cetaceans and equally strong in corvids and pigs, neither of which attracts comparable protection; the dolphin benefits less from its intelligence than from its resemblance to a smile. That objection ___ justified, but justification is not the same as necessity. If public affection is what mobilises funding for marine reserves, refusing to use it is a costly form of consistency. The harder question is whether a movement built on charisma can ever extend its protection to the animals nobody finds charming.
