Helicopters: causativo have something done (B2)

Helicopter maintenance is governed by rules written after accidents. Unlike a fixed-wing aircraft, a helicopter depends on a single rotor system in which the failure of one component is rarely survivable, so airworthiness authorities require operators to ___ at fixed intervals, regardless of how well the machine appears to be flying. Air ambulance services in remote regions face a particular dilemma: the aircraft that saves lives is also expensive to ground, and pressure to keep it available has been identified in several inquiries as a contributing factor in crashes. The industry's answer has been to separate the engineering decision from the commercial one, so that the person who signs the release to service has no financial interest in whether the flight departs on time.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) have the rotor blades to inspect
  2. B) have the rotor blades inspecting
  3. C) have the rotor blades inspect
  4. D) have the rotor blades inspected
  5. E) having the rotor blades inspected
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: D

O causativo have something done indica que o sujeito manda executar um serviço por terceiros e se constrói com have + objeto + particípio passado. "Have the rotor blades inspecting" e "have the rotor blades inspect" tornariam as pás o agente da inspeção, o que é impossível. "Have the rotor blades to inspect" significaria que os operadores têm pás para inspecionar por conta própria, mudando o sentido, e "having" não pode seguir a partícula "to" do infinitivo exigido por "require operators to".
