Sport: modal perfeito em contexto hipotético (C1)

The professionalisation of sport is usually told as a story of money, but it is better understood as a story of measurement. Once performance could be recorded, compared and ranked across distances and decades, the amateur ideal lost its footing: an activity whose whole point is the pursuit of a number cannot easily be described as play. Television completed the transformation by making that number visible to millions at once. Had the tournament calendar not been rebuilt around broadcast schedules in the 1970s, several disciplines ___ resolutely regional for another generation, watched by the towns that produced them and funded by subscription. Instead they acquired global audiences, global sponsors and the pathologies that follow: doping regimes designed around testing windows, youth academies that discard most of their intake, and governing bodies wealthy enough to answer to nobody. The paradox is that the same measurement which undermined the amateur ideal also made cheating detectable. Sport is now policed by the instruments that gave it a reason to cheat.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) might have remained
  2. B) might remain
  3. C) might had remained
  4. D) may remaining
  5. E) might have been remained
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: A

A oração condicional está invertida sem "if" e no past perfect ("Had the calendar not been rebuilt"), o que caracteriza uma hipótese contrafactual sobre o passado. A consequência exige, portanto, um modal perfeito: "might have remained". "Might remain" projetaria um resultado presente, incompatível com o complemento "for another generation" e com o passado narrado a seguir. "Might had remained" é impossível, pois modais nunca são seguidos de forma flexionada, e "might have been remained" cria uma voz passiva com um verbo intransitivo, que não admite passivização.
