The moon: condicionais mistas (B2)

The Moon keeps one face permanently turned towards us, a consequence of tidal forces that slowed its rotation until it matched its orbit. The far side was therefore a complete mystery until a Soviet probe photographed it in 1959, and the images revealed a surface far more heavily cratered, with almost none of the dark volcanic plains that dominate the side we see. If the Moon were not tidally locked, astronomers ___ that difference centuries ago, and our theories of planetary formation would have taken a different route. Today the far side has practical value as well: it is permanently shielded from terrestrial radio noise, which makes it the best site in the inner solar system for the kind of radio telescope that cannot function on Earth.

Assinale a alternativa que completa corretamente a lacuna do texto.

  1. A) would map
  2. B) will have mapped
  3. C) had mapped
  4. D) would be mapping
  5. E) would have mapped
Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: E

Trata-se de uma condicional mista: a condição descreve um fato permanente e presente ("if the Moon were not tidally locked") e a consequência se situa no passado, marcada por "centuries ago", exigindo would + have + particípio. "Would map" e "would be mapping" colocariam a consequência no presente, contradizendo o advérbio de tempo passado. "Will have mapped" pertence ao futuro perfeito e não combina com uma condição irreal, e "had mapped" seria a forma da oração condicional, não da principal.
