Water plants: condicionais mistas (B2)

Water hyacinth is the clearest example of a plant punished for doing exactly what it is good at. Native to the Amazon basin, it absorbs nutrients from water at extraordinary speed, which is why nineteenth-century collectors carried it around the world as an ornamental, and why sanitary engineers later built it into treatment ponds. In warm nutrient-rich water outside its natural range, and without the insects that control it at home, the same efficiency turns it into a mat thick enough to stop boats, block turbines and suffocate the life below. If the species were not such a formidable purifier, engineers ___ it into those systems in the first place, and dozens of tropical reservoirs would be cheaper to manage today.

Resposta correta: E

A condição descreve uma característica permanente da planta, expressa no passado simples do irreal ("if the species were not"), enquanto a consequência se localiza claramente no passado, marcada por "in the first place": trata-se de uma condicional mista com would + have + particípio. "Would never introduce" e "would never be introducing" situariam a consequência no presente, contrariando o fato histórico de que a planta já foi introduzida. "Will never have introduced" não combina com uma condição irreal, e "had never introduced" é forma de oração condicional, não de oração principal.
