Zoos: estrutura clivada com it is... that (C1)

The modern zoo lives with a contradiction it did not invent. It began as a display of imperial reach, a cabinet of captured territories arranged for the pleasure of the metropolis, and it has spent the past half-century trying to become something else: a laboratory, a refuge, an ark. The transformation is real. Breeding programmes have returned the Arabian oryx to the desert and the California condor to the air, and studbooks maintained across continents now manage genetic diversity with a precision no wild population enjoys. ___ most defenders of the institution appeal when they are asked to justify the enclosure. Critics reply that the arithmetic is convenient: the species restored are few, the animals confined are many, and the educational effect on visitors has never been measured with the rigour applied to the breeding itself. Both arguments are honest. What remains unresolved is whether an institution can atone for its origins while continuing to depend on the spectacle those origins created.

Ver gabarito comentado

Resposta correta: D

A clivada enfática segue o molde "it is + elemento focalizado + that", e o elemento focalizado aqui é o sintagma preposicionado exigido pelo verbo "appeal to".
